A Historic Appointment, A Familiar Mission
On August 2, 2025, Jeanine Pirro was officially confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia — one of the most powerful and visible prosecutorial roles in the nation.
Unlike other districts, the D.C. U.S. Attorney oversees both federal crimes and serious local offenses — from violent crime to public corruption — in the nation’s capital. It’s a position of great influence, and Pirro’s return to this kind of legal leadership brings renewed focus to her roots in victim-centered justice.
At the American Family Center, we believe this moment is more than symbolic. It’s a reminder that bold, survivor-focused leadership still matters — and that many of our programs today build directly on the foundations she helped lay decades ago.
For Women: From Private Pain to Public Justice
In the 1980s, domestic violence was still dismissed by many as a “private matter.” But as Westchester County’s first female District Attorney, Jeanine Pirro rejected that thinking.
She launched one of the nation’s first dedicated domestic violence prosecution units, trained police to carry out mandatory arrests, and fought for a system where prosecutors could move forward with a case even if the survivor couldn’t testify.
“We treated domestic violence like the crime it is — not a private family issue, but a matter of public safety.”
— Jeanine Pirro
At AFC, we embrace that same survivor-first approach through our Wednesday’s Women program — offering dignity-first, judgment-free help for those seeking safety, stability, and support.
For Children: Protecting the Smallest Voices
Pirro’s focus extended to children — especially those caught in the shadows of family violence. She created a Child Sex Abuse and Family Violence Bureau with trauma-informed professionals, and advocated for custody reforms that considered domestic violence history in court rulings.
“Children shouldn’t be forced to testify in open court against their abusers. The trauma can be lifelong. We owe them safety, not more exposure.”
At AFC, our Choices Interactive platform carries that vision forward. Through digital role-play scenarios, youth can recognize red flags and learn strategies for safety — before abuse cycles take root.
For Seniors: Breaking the Silence of Elder Abuse
Pirro was also a national voice for elder protection before it was widely recognized. She spearheaded multidisciplinary teams to investigate abuse and neglect, and created pathways for banks and social workers to report financial exploitation.
“Elder abuse is silent. We must break that silence with coordinated, compassionate action.”
At AFC, our upcoming Elder Tours VR program aims to do just that — using immersive experiences to raise awareness, reduce isolation, and promote dignity for older adults.
Why Her Legacy Still Matters
Pirro’s elevation to one of the highest prosecutorial offices in the country reminds us that real change begins with believing survivors and changing systems. Her early legal innovations — DV units, child witness safeguards, elder abuse prevention teams — continue to shape how we respond to vulnerability.
At the American Family Center, we honor that legacy through our work in the present:
- Wednesday’s Women | Survivor essentials and support
- Choices Interactive | Prevention through education
- Virtual Reality Tours & Continuing Education | Elder dignity through connection
Though the tools have evolved, the principles remain:
- Believe survivors
- Train responders
- Engage communities
- Protect the vulnerable
We’re not alone in this work — and we’re proud to follow in the footsteps of those who brought these issues out of the shadows.
