We envision a society where everyone has the tools to identify unhealthy relationships and the courage to build connections based on respect, empathy, and trust. By focusing on education, awareness, and direct support, we strive to create a ripple effect of change—one that not only transforms individual lives but also strengthens the fabric of our communities.
Our Team
Barry W. Frank
Co-founder & Director
Raised in Newton, Massachusetts, Barry is a lifelong advocate for victims and survivors of domestic violence. As a co-founder of the American Family Center, he has been the driving force behind its mission to support those in need.
With over 25 years of experience in antiques, estate sales, and auctions, Barry chose to “pay it forward” by using his expertise to acquire home goods for individuals transitioning from secure shelter to independent living.
His vision and advocacy have shaped the Center’s prevention and support programs, guiding its ongoing development to better serve those in crisis.
James M. Sherman
Co-founder
In loving memory, we honor James M. Sherman, our beloved co-founder, who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. A proud Newton, MA native and military veteran, James was instrumental in shaping the American Family Center and its mission.
His passion for helping others fueled his work, from securing grants and distributing essential home goods to ensuring critical services reached those in need. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston, James was widely recognized for his community outreach efforts within the university long before co-founding the Center.
His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our cause will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
David S. Frank
Director
Born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, David brings decades of leadership experience in marketing, public relations, and communications. As the founder of an award-winning agency, he has dedicated his career to strategic storytelling and advocacy.
A longtime volunteer and consultant to the American Family Center, David has played a key role in shaping communications, public relations, and program development. Now stepping into a more active role, he applies his experience to overseeing operations and guiding the Center’s future.
David holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY (1979).
Our History
Standing Up to Domestic Violence for Decades
In 1992, the American Family Center—originally known as American Family Thrift—began as a storefront thrift shop on 1698 Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton, Massachusetts.
From the start, we have operated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, committed to helping families and individuals struggling to maintain safe and secure home environments.
Over the years, our mission has evolved to focus on raising public awareness and driving social change around domestic violence and abuse, as well as other pressing social concerns. While advocacy remains at our core, we continue to provide direct support to both victims and survivors, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to rebuild their lives
